Hallo an Alle,
Also knapp 2 Stunden waren es bestimmt.
Unglaublich, was es alles in Moskau gibt.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MOSCOW, Sept. 7 — Out on the dewy grass of the Moscow Country Club on a recent morning, a cheery Russian couple, dressed to the nines in golf attire, hacked and sliced their way along the fairway of the second hole, a par 5 with a gentle swale and a sand trap guarding the hole. With loud yells of “Fore!†they sent divots flying into the air and balls slicing through the foliage of a birch grove.
While clearly adept at sports — Russia reaps a reliable crop of medals at the Olympics and churns out tennis and hockey talent — Russians have long trailed badly in golf, which was suppressed as an elitist bourgeois distraction during Soviet times. But with the country awash in oil money, that is changing rapidly.
“We Russians start slow, but then we cannot be stopped,†said Maxim M. Fedoseyev, a movie producer and avid golfer here. “Golf is exploding now.â€
The country club, in a birch and pine forest that is a 20-minute drive outside the city, was built by the Soviet Foreign Ministry as a lure for foreign businessmen — an idea hatched in 1974 at the dawn of the era of detente by the American oil tycoon Armand Hammer, who was an informal adviser to the Soviet leadership on business matters.
This being Russia, some things take a little getting used to. For one thing, many of the members, who pay a $32,000 entry fee and $3,773 annually, are accompanied on the course by their bodyguards.
“I go to the espresso machine, and I notice that everybody around me is packing heat,†said Bill Pigman, an American businessman, about one recent detour to the coffee counter in the opulent clubhouse, where a cappuccino costs $7.
“And we get out behind them on the fourth hole, and these bodyguards come up to us and say, ‘Wow, slow down. Give us some room here,’ †Mr. Pigman said. He slowed down. “I’m interested in the collision of the new Russian culture and the game.â€
Clubhouse talk, he said, still turns to the time a prostitute was discovered standing by the 15th tee, looking to drum up business with the wealthy members. “Where do you find that in Peoria?†he asked. The woman was eventually evicted from the course.
In the parking lot, where a silver Bentley and a red Ferrari could be seen on a recent day, a guard strolled around — smoking a cigarette — examining the undercarriages of those cars for bombs.
While the members may lack golfing skills, they are not short of the other necessary ingredient: money.
“When the money comes, so does demand for golf,†said Vladimir I. Dorogoy, the director of a metals trading company in Moscow, waiting for congestion to clear on the first teeing ground. With a handicap of 2, he is one of the club’s more accomplished players; he had a bogey on the first hole, despite hitting into a sand trap.
Until this summer, Moscow, the largest city in Europe, with a population of around 10 million and billionaires by the bushel, had only two golf courses.
Until this year, in all of Russia, a country that spans 11 time zones and occupies a sixth of the land surface area of Earth, there were only three courses — the two in Moscow and a six-holer outside of St. Petersburg, the nation’s second largest city. In contrast, the United States has 16,052 golf courses.
This year, two new courses opened in Moscow, and a wealthy businessman built a private course in the countryside in central Russia, doubling the golfing infrastructure in one year. Another 60 golf courses are planned or under construction, according to the Russian Golf Association, spanning from the resort town of Mineraly Vody in the Caucasus to Vladivostok on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.
The demand may be building, but golfing skills still sometimes lag. “They are not as knowledgeable of the game because it is not in their tradition,†Nick Taylor, a British P.G.A. trainer at the club, said diplomatically of his Russian clients. “If you ask somebody here, they might not know who Tiger Woods is.â€
Partly, Russia’s golf gap stemmed from the Soviet authorities’ single-minded focus on Olympic sports, of which golf is not one, and their disdain for golf because of its association with wealth, according to Konstantin Y. Gribkov, a trainer at the Moscow Country Club.
Still, there is hope of catching up quickly now, he said. Tennis, once neglected, was revived in the 1990’s under President Boris N. Yeltsin, a player who lavished attention on the sport. Maria Sharapova, who is seeded third in the United States Open, for example, trained in the United States but got her start at a tennis club in Moscow in the early 1990’s.
Not all Russians are duffers. Golf fans here are watching Vera Shimanskaya, a gold medalist in 2000 in rhythmic gymnastics, who now plays daily amid speculation that she is angling to eventually break into the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Perhaps the closest Russia has to a professional golfer is Anastasia Kostina, who is now at Washington State University and is striving to enter the L.P.G.A. Tour.
Neil Sweeney, a British golf instructor, said Russia was bound to produce professional golfers within a few years, once the game became accessible. “The ones who take to it practice like crazy,†he said. “It’s how they are raised. They have that mentality.â€
